Too often, someone is never invited.
For millions of parents raising children alone, the missing seat isn't love.
It's support.
Single mothers make up most single-parent households. Millions of single fathers, grandparents, foster parents, and guardians are also raising children with the time, income, and energy of one person instead of two.
Recently, a program in Jackson, Mississippi chose trust over bureaucracy. Instead of more forms and conditions, eligible low-income mothers received direct monthly financial support. Many reported lower stress, greater financial stability, improved housing security, and more time to focus on raising their children.
When family policies are discussed, are the people carrying the greatest responsibility actually at the table?

Most of us search for help when we need it.
The Missing Seat asks us to do something different.
When you notice a parent struggling, don't stop at saying, "I'm sorry."
- Look up childcare assistance.
- Find housing support.
- Search for local family organizations.
- Share information about available benefits.
- Offer an hour of babysitting.
- Offer a ride.
- Offer your time.
They may already know about those resources.
That isn't the point.
The point is that someone noticed.
Someone cared enough to act.
