When Children Are Treated Like Criminals
A child should never lose their future because the system failed to give them the same chance.
A United Nations committee has warned that Indigenous children in Australia continue to face systemic racial discrimination throughout the criminal justice system.
They are disproportionately arrested, detained, and imprisoned compared with non-Indigenous children.
Think about that.
Children.
Not because they are inherently more dangerous.
Because the systems surrounding them do not treat every child equally.
The Missing Seat is not always found in a courtroom.
Sometimes it begins in a classroom.
Sometimes it begins when a child is watched more closely, punished more harshly, or given fewer opportunities to recover from a mistake.
Every child deserves to grow up believing they belong.
Who is missing?
The children whose futures are being decided by systems that were never designed to treat them equally.
What can we do?
Learn how Indigenous children are treated within your own country’s education and justice systems. Support organizations led by Indigenous communities, and question policies that punish children rather than giving them a genuine path forward.
